Boarding your Bonsai is one of the most important things we do here at Bonsai West. Whether you are going on vacation or your trees simply need a warm greenhouse/spa, your Bonsai are our priority.
Our basic boarding service includes a diagnosis upon drop-off with a recommendation for needed length of stay, and daily care. If your tree is here for an extended stay we also include maintenance pruning and feeding.

Winter may well be the most difficult time for growing bonsai in New England. Cold hardy bonsai are kept from freezing in our temperature-controlled facilities while still allowing them the dormancy they need for optimal health. Tropical/Indoor Bonsai spend the cold months in a special heated greenhouse, where they receive the right amounts of light and water to thrive. Our customers have discovered just how easy this hobby becomes when trees are grown in a tropical environment during these shortest days of Winter. We take pride in treating your trees every bit the same as our own, and better! We include fertilizing, insect and disease control, and maintenance pruning with this service. Drop your bonsai off any time after October 1st for a complete winter rest, and pick them up after April 30th to enjoy again in your own surroundings.
Season = OCT 1st – APRIL 30th
additional charge of $1/day for late pick-ups

At Bonsai West we want to turn our customers into students, and pruning is one of the fundamental skills that we teach. We offer workshops, classes and private lessons on a regular basis just for this purpose. However if you would rather have us do the pruning and styling, bring your tree in for a consultation and we will be happy to do the work for you, after discussing with you the design and process that is best for your tree.
Level | Cost |
---|---|
Basic | $90/hour |
Master | $140/hour |
NOTE:
A minimum 1-week of boarding is required as we do not conduct “on-the-spot” pruning/styling. We strongly suggest a minimum of 1-month stay in our nursery to ensure proper results under our care.
Re-potting and root-pruning bonsai is a necessary process to stimulate vigorous root growth, allowing your tree to thrive in a small pot.
Bonsai need to be re-potted every 2 to 5 years, depending on the species of tree and rate of growth. Bonsai are re-potted during the late winter through Summer depending on the species of tree. We don’t recommend re-potting any trees during November, December, and January, and we almost never re-pot weak or sick trees.
Bring your tree in for a consultation so that we could plan ahead together for your specific bonsai service needs!

Bonsai trees, like any other living thing, can get sick. Most often that happens because of over- or under-watering, or even a combination of both.
A sick tree is vulnerable to insects and fungus as well. The first signs that your tree is not well could be yellowing leaves or a general dull color to the foliage. Often a sick tree stops drinking as much water and the soil appears soggy, at other times it will drop all its leaves because of a severe dry-out.
For best results bring your tree in to us at the first signs of stress.
Disclaimer: A stay of two to three months is generally the length of time needed to start a sick tree back on a path to full recovery and health. Depending on the severity of infection, we may recommend an extended stay and additional treatments.
