With meticulous care and detailed work, a humble Dwarf Jade (Portulacaria afra) can be a tree of substance and dramatic presence. Also called the Elephant Bush and locally, Spekboom, these trees are native to South Africa and are an important food and medicine in South African culture. They can grow to full height of 8-12′, and their fast-growing nature makes them an excellent choice for bonsai fans both beginner and practiced. In this intro-friendly class, students will prune and pot a mature Dwarf Jade stock tree, going home with a bonsai that is both stunning and easy to care for. This species prefers warmer climates, meaning it resides indoors during the winter, and will do well outside in temperatures above 60 degrees F.
