Bonsai West is elated to welcome back internationally acclaimed kusamono artist, Young Choe, for a special summer workshop! Kusamono (草物, “grass thing”) and kokedama (苔玉, “moss ball”) have historically been used to accompany formal bonsai displays as accents, but more recently the craft has been elevated to an art form of its own.

In this 2-hour workshop, Young will show you how to create plantings which reflect the ecology and landscapes of New England using local plants, grasses, and mosses. All materials will be provided, including a custom handmade pot made by New England sculptor Amber Geneva. Registration in the workshop includes free admission to the morning demonstration.

If you missed registration for the Kusamono workshop, you may still purchase tickets for Young’s live lecture and demonstration in the garden at Bonsai West. During this presentation, Ms. Choe will walk through some of the history and philosophies of kusamono, an expansive portfolio of her work, and the techniques she uses to create and display these elegant plantings. Space is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot!
